ARTIST BIOS

DEEPDOWN UNDERGROUND:

Nanobot (UK)

Nanobot aka Mike Halloran co-runs the Z-bop record label with a family of like minded South West producers and is an integral part of the Exeter based DJ crew NONOM, playing a diverse range of styles encompassing hip hop, techno, electro, house, dubstep, electronica and beyond.

Inspired to action by the acid house boom that hit Plymouth in 1989/1990, Mike bought his first turntables. Whilst still at school a close friend started distributing records - including Detroit techno and Chicago house direct from the US - via his bedroom. It was during this time Mike laid the foundation for his record collection.

Following various gigs around Devon and Cornwall in the early 90’s, Mike held down residencies at the now defunct Plymouth nights UFO and Jungle Fresh.

Operating under the overtly humorous DJ name ‘Rednutz’ he supported many artists including Grooverider, Afrika Bambaataa and Mark Pritchard.

In 2000 he was one of ten finalists in a Roland music competition and performed a live set at The End in London. In 2001 Mike went to the US where he continued to spin records with DJ sets in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix, Arizona.

After returning to the UK, Nanobot set up the record label Z-bop in 2003 with fellow artists Dave Kempston aka Clatterbox (Clear/Neo Ouija), Steve Horne aka The Horn (Universal Language), Goliath and Signal Jammer. The label has since released the ‘Solarphase’ EP from Clatterbox followed by the ‘Heatseeker’ EP by Even Steven and the ‘Mineral Kingdom’ mini-lp/CD by Goliath.

In the winter of 2004/05 Nanobot, Even Steven, Signal Jammer and The Presence started a series of now legendary club nights in Exeter under the name NONOM (No Nonsense Music) and have since been joined by like-minded djs and producers from around the globe. Intrinsically linked with the Z-bop record label NONOM also provides a platform for the labels artist’s. NONOM continues as a series of one-off events and broadcasts playing an uncompromising and genre-defying blend of forward thinking dance music.

Z-bop was well received by the global electronic music community and this is reflected in the labels latest project - a download only album entitled RAW Files Vol. 1 featuring international artists MANASYt (Italy), The Wee DJs (Scotland), Dan Lodig (Vienna), Dynarec (France) and The Exaltics (Solaris, Antarctica). The compilation also features Z-bop core artists Clatterbox, Even Steven, Goliath and Nanobot’s debut release, a track entitled ‘Mitochondria’. RAW Files Vol. 1 is available from most online music stores including Beatport, Bleep, Juno, Boomkat and DJDownload.

Nanobot was recently featured in the documentary ‘Darkbeat – An Electro World Voyage’ and continues to DJ regularly in the UK and Europe as part of the NONOM DJs with new residencies at Disco Nectar, Cardiff and The Velvet Lounge, Exeter. Nanobot’s ‘Utility Fog’ EP is coming soon on Z-bop.

DEEP DOWN UNDERGROUND: Bloodshot (UK)

Bloodshot has spent many a night on the decks. From his roots in punk he used elements of the rave scene to organise events that spanned rave, reggae and hip hop. He later pursued the hip hop scene and with XL, hosted Flava in Plymouth which later became the local cutting edge hip hop event.

The event gained huge local support and up and coming UK acts were invited to appear. We’re talking from ‘94 on when First Rate was new to the scene, when Disorda still played American sets, when Roots Manuva hadn’t yet done Witness, when Taskforce where the Battlecats, when Ty was still pushin Ghetto Grammer and Shortee Blitz was P.I.C., and Mark B still gave away his records. Cutmaster Swift would play for us while on holiday in the area and gave us the first Enforcers show. MK would do a four hour set to make the jouney worthwhile whilst Blade just jumped in the car with Grasshopper for something to do. A young Milestone was in the crowd along with a London runaway known as Manage and The Jungle Drummer was planning his future beats!

Mr Thing rocked the parties, then the venues started shutting. Nights amalgamated and Flava hosted room 2 of the Plymouth Academy against the Jungle of Legends of the Dark Black which was the largest Jungle event in the South West UK for 4-5 years.

But it’s not been all about hip hop for Bloodshot! Running alongside this has been an interest in the breaks scene building up from trip hop to big beat and settling for the bass heavy sound.

Anyone that came to Plymouth and played the Cooperage would have Bloodshot on the decks before them, be it Tipper, Freq Nasty, Hardnox, Freestylers. Bloodshot has/is/and will push hip hop and the bassline breaks and all round partying whenever possible. He is no longer involved in promoting events but is always willing to spin the tunes be it hip hop, techno or breaks. A gabba session is never turned down.

Bloodshot reviews both genres for 24/7 magazine.

DEEP DOWN UNDERGROUND: PHAT CHEX (UK)

Phat Chex’s fascination with electronica began in the 1980s , when he started listening to electro and hip hop. When the rave scene became popular his fascination turned into an obsession, and he bought his first set of turntables in 93. He started mixing hip hop, inspired by DJs such as Premier, Noize and Q-Bert. Phat Chex decided that this is where his future lay and began developing his mixing technique by cutting and scratching. He then discovered the sound of trip hop on labels such as MoWax and Ninja Tunes, where the advent of nu-skool breaks in the 90s fused hip hop and electro influences.

Phat Chex gained regular bookings at UFO, Plymouth’s electro night, as well as a monthly residency at Legends of the Dark Black in the Dance Academy and whilst playing in the majority of the Plymouth clubs, Phat Chex has also played in the capital London as well as Europe.

Phat Chex then moved to London to broaden his musical horizons, and played in and around London with DJs such as Hyper, Tayo and Adam Freeland. He has also shared the lineup with such artists such B.L.I.M, Meat Katie, ADJ, Tayo, Rennie Pilgrim, Hyper, Jungle Drummer, the Scratch Perverts and Afrika Bambaata, who asked him to scratch during his set on the 4 deck setup.

He later left the capital and returned to Plymouth to start a family and took a four year break from his mixing. However, he could not forget his obsession and after experimenting with a variety of musical styles he discovered a new techy sound, not quite house and not quite techno.

Fresh from his electro breaks set at Magik Bullet in May, Phat Chex is joining the Etulosba lineup.

DEEP DOWN UNDERGROUND: Aubit (UK)

DJ Aubit aka Aubrey King has had an affinity with electronic music for as long as he can remember. Maybe it was the influence of his mum who was an avid Jean Michel Jarre fan blasting out the Oxygene and Equinoxe LPs during the late Seventies that started the ball rolling.

There were two songs in particular that made a lasting impression - “The Model” by Kraftwerk released in 1981 and “Buffalo Gals” by Malcolm McLaren released in 1982. The futuristic sounds blew him away and in 1983 the first album he bought was “Radio-Activity” by Kraftwerk.

By the late Eighties Aubit had picked up on a new sound hitting these shores, originating mainly from Chicago and Detroit, this new sound was called House music. So began his passion for dance, club culture and record buying. In 2001, after years of nagging from friends he finally brought a pair of record decks.

In 2002 he played out a successful first set in a pub in Peckham, London. He continued to DJ at many private parties throughout the South East.

In 2005 he co-founded the “Spread The Word” organisation with The Goose aka Duncan Smith after winning a monthly residency at the Horse and Groom pub in Horsham, West Sussex. They literally turned this town pub into a nightclub.

Specialising in Techno it proved to be one of the most popular nights out you could find in Horsham.

In December 2006 The Goose and Aubit were then invited to play at a club in Brighton for another successful event called “Out Of The Fields”.

Aubit decided to quit his monthly residency in late December 2007 to concentrate on spreading the word further afield.

DEEP DOWN UNDERGROUND: Anna Sonic (UK)

Anna Sonic has been a regular face on the local DJ circuit since 1994. Following her initial debut set at Plymouth’s well known local event Premonition, she has played at a number of south coast venues alongside the creme of the British techno scene, sharing the bill with Chris Liberator, Rachel Rackitt and local techno master Calrek, the founder of Oorpi Techno.

Anna has also been invited to play for the hugely successful Mehanika organisation based in St Petersburg, Russia, and will be following in the footsteps of Oorpi Techno’s Calrek, Swaran and Pathogen who all have performed at the very popular Mehanika festivals in the Ukraine and Russia! Anna’s own productions and remixes have been pressed onto many dubplates and have received support from local and international DJs.

She is definitely well on the way to being a respected techno producer with her own productions receiving much praise and admiration from international DJs and producers in Germany, Holland and the UK.

Anna is presently collaborating with Calrek in the Play More Techno project, aimed at further promoting quality underground techno via an interactive online radio station and forthcoming record label alongside international techno artists such as O.B.I. [DE], HardtraX [DE], DJ Niv [RU], Van Nosikov [RU], Calrek [UK], and Nanobot [UK] to name just a few!

Check out Anna Sonic’s live internet sessions on: http://playmoretechno.net.

Anna will be opening the Etulosba party playing her usual groovy techno including some of her own productions.
